Biography
Iain Roy, born in 1971, grew up on the fringes of Glasgow and South Lanarkshire, where as a boy he discovered his interest in nature. Although having studied art and design, and gaining an HNC in Spatial Design at Glasgow’s College of Building and Printing, Iain’s forays in art have been largely self-taught.
Creative expression has also been found in landscape and nature photography, having contributed to various magazine, calendar and postcard publishings.
During this time Iain also co-designed video covers with well-known naturalist, Mike Tomkies.
Now based in Whithorn in Galloway, Iain mainly pursues art and illustration through varying media: acrylic, ink (stippling) and pencil; but it is watercolour that has become the mainstay.
‘The play of watercolour lends itself best to expression of light and tone, offering a transparent quality and bringing subtleties of life from nature into life on the page.’
Inspiration can be eclectic, though usually comes from a deep love of wildlife and from personal spiritual experience.
‘Nature is constant and moving, as is the heart of the Divine. Both inspire me to create.’
